Traditionally the cowboy has been associated with working cattle via horseback, riding and mending fences, and long hours in often harsh conditions. While all of this is still true, today's cowboy has also integrated contemporary technology into their process. This image suggests the tall, strong, traditional cowboy coordinating his efforts via cell phone while standing next to his truck and horse trailer, all symbols of this integrated technology, facing the morning light which is in actuality already the middle of his day. This intentionally abstracted depiction suggests the contemporary condition in which the cowboy currently exists. This painting was done on the Quinn Ranch during my 2025 Texas Ranch Fellowship, sponsored by the San Angelo Museum of Fine Art, and was exhibited at the museum at the conclusion of the fellowship.
